7 PRINCIPLES OF INTERIOR DESIGN

BY VIGIL INTERIOR DECORATION

Interior design mainly involves seven principles for creating a harmonious and elegant interior appearance. They are

balance, unity/harmony, rhythm, scale and proportion, emphasis, contrast and details

1.1. BALANCE

Balance mainly implies the equilibrium between visual aspects, distributing furniture and decorative objects.

Mainly three types of balancing aspects are applied in interior design:

Symmetrical Balance

It is the technique of dividing a space evenly into two sides that mirror each other. Mostly employed in Traditional or formal rooms

Asymmetrical Balance

Asymmetrical balance focus on the modern approach that offers more flexibility and involves balancing between the visual objects that are similar in size, shape and dimensions.

Radial Balance

Radial balance mainly focus on larger space and the technique involve a central focal point where all other elements or objects are arranged radiating from or around it.

2. UNITY AND HARMONY

Unity in interior design can be created by material choices, furniture sizes or even by creating harmony with the shapes that select. Principle of harmony refers to create a sense of unity across all rooms by similar colors, designs and furniture and adaptation of common theme.

3. RHYTHM

Create rhythm through arranging elements in a repetitive, progressive, transitive way. Similar furniture styles, patterns and colour scheme in repetition or contrast way creates a sense of rhythm.

4. SCALE AND PROPORTION

Scale refers to the fitting of objects in the room and is concerned with the relationship between the size of objects and the size of a space.

Proportion concerns with the items fitting together in a space and spatially pleasing balance of repetition. It is the relationship between two or more differently sized objects.

Golden Ratio scheme is widely used by architects and artists for creating pleasing proportion.

5. EMPHASIS

Emphasis primarily refers to creating a focal point of theme or drawing attention to specific designing concepts.

An art work, bold statement of color or texture can be used to emphasise one item as the centre of attention, while the others will serve as decors will around it.

6. CONTRAST

It is the art of pairing two different concepts or themes into one such that it creates a pleasing combination.

Aesthetic effects can be created by combining contrast shapes, materials, or patterns. Contrasting colour combinations can create an elegant appearance to the interior.

7. DETAILS

Attention to precise details enhances the beauty and creates more aesthetic appearance. Even smaller detailing can create a mind-blowing look to the interior.
